About the paintings

Almost all of the paintings shown are painted with oil on canvas. I have used oil since I was at college and love the flexibility, durability and permanence of the medium and the myriad of effects which can be achieved depending how it is handled. One of the best features of oil paint is that the colour remains the same on the canvas as when it comes out of the tube.

There have been many improvements in oil paints over the years and I am now excited to discover new colours with excellent lightfastness.

MariAn Simpson

MariAn was born in Dublin but grew up and was formally trained in England where she gained her B. A. in Fine Art.

MariAn's paintings are mainly of the beautiful scenes which surround her home on Portugal's Silver Coast, namely the lagoon at Foz do Arelho, the stunning local beaches, the beautiful walled, medieval town of Óbidos and the old parts of Caldas da Rainha.
